“Your beauty goes so much deeper than what you see in a photo. How you live, how you serve, and how you love are more important than the size of your dress or the shape of your nose.”
– More Than Pretty, Erica Campbell
I Didn’t Have Time To Read…
As a coach, there are 4 vital behaviors you agree to implement in your life daily. These 4 things are to help you not only with your health & fitness but you overall wellness. They are:
- Be a product of the product (using the products and programs and committing to your journey, even on the days you don’t feel like it!)
- Connect with new people, invite them to join you
- Help your customers get results by leading by example
- Personal Development
This last one was one I avoided for months when I first started coaching.
Sure, I’d read my morning devotional and sometimes I’d listen to a motivational podcast or something but I never consistently implemented personal development…until I realized that no matter how much my body changed, my mind wasn’t consistently growing; my habits & routines weren’t really changing long-term.
The Shift I Finally Made…
So, I started.
I listened to podcasts and I picked a book to read.
As a teacher, I felt like I didn’t have time to actually read for luxury or to even grow myself. So much of my energy went into my job. BUT I will tell you, actually committing to personal development DAILY is finally where I saw a shift in myself and started to grow.
Now, it’s part of my life and it’s the FIRST thing I turn to when I feel a little “lost” in a certain area of my life.
This book is one I stumbled upon. I first learned about the author from her free 5 day devotional plan in the YouVersion Bible App (if you’re a member, add me as your friend! I’d love to connect with you there!) I loved the plan so much and I truly felt it spoke to some parts of my soul that I needed; parts about who God says that I am. I also knew that so many women who follow me on social media would benefit from seeing “pieces” of this book.
A Few Of My Favorite Excerpts:
“When you surround yourself with good people, you are protected. But when you open yourself to the counsel of those who lead you away from God, you’ll end up going nowhere. If you’re trying to get your life on track and your heart right with God, but you’re still spending every Friday night with your girl who always wants to go to the bar and drink too much, or you’re still calling your ex when you’re lonely, you’re letting yourself get pulled in by the distractions of life.”
“Just so we’re clear: letting go is not the same as sweeping your feelings under the rug. Pain that is unaddressed is just as damaging as pain that is too often expressed. Repressed feelings end up coming out eventually, often when we least expect them. They explode either internally or externally.”
“God didn’t just give you a soul; He also gave you a body. And there’s no way for you to take care of the inside without also taking care of the outside. There’s no way to fully love yourself and never wash your face or comb your hair in the morning. Your soul work includes your choice to honor and respect everything God gave you.”
In More Than Pretty, Erica does an amazing job of making you feel like you’re sitting right beside her as you read each word. I’ve never met her but I feel like I know her, can hear her voice… almost like a big sister having a real conversation with me.
This book was SO good for my soul and reinforced some things I know but haven’t been consistently believing, living out, or sharing with others.
More Than Pretty is absolutely a book for you to add to your list this year.
